2011 Non Winners Singles Cup

The Non Winners Singles Cup is the first of the 2011 autumn competitions for those members who have not won a singles competition here in Spain or UK during the last 5 years.

Monday 10th October eighteen players commenced this keenly contested competition in glorious sunshine. In the morning there were two games in the preliminary rounds planned, but unfortunately one payer didn’t turn up giving our illustrious Captain a bye!!!!! The First round then took place, in the afternoon. On Friday morning of the 14^th, the Quarter finals and in the afternoon the Semi’s, with the Final taking place on Saturday afternoon.

This year the standard of play was very good throughout. The first Semi-final figured John Mannall against Mike Laight and the second was between Les Pratchett and fairly new bowler Liz Quintrell.

These matches were all good to watch. John and Mike’s game was intense but John who has been bowling extremely throughout the summer came out as the victor. In the other match, Les who has improved his game immensely during the last year was expected to win this contest, however Liz who had already knocked out some very good bowlers on the way had other ideas and was on fire, not letting Les get going, although he played very well.    

The Final was great to watch with both John Mannall and Liz Quintell giving the many spectators an afternoon of super bowls. In the early ends there was not a lot of difference in the scores. On the sixteenth end scores were level at 12-12 and level again on the nineteenth at 14-14. Unfortunately for Liz, John starting to put more pressure on as he chipped away, not allowing Liz to score any more shots and winning fairly comfortably in the end.

On the presentation of the cup yours truly thanked the two finalists for giving the many spectators a fantastic game. He also thanked the markers and Colin Wright for umpiring throughout; who without, the competition could not take place.
