2011 CALB 11 a Side Final Report
This was the second year of this competition which involved twelve teams from the local clubs, Almeria Cabrera and Indalo. These were divided into two groups of four, Red Group and Blue Group. Over a six week period prior to the final every Tuesday, teams of eleven, made up of a Men’s Pairs, Ladies Pairs, Triples and Fours played their hearts out to win their particular group.
The finalists were the winners of Blue Group, Almeria B.C and Red Group, Indalo B.C. This year the game was held at Cabrera Bowling Club and commenced on 13th December at 1400 on a glorious sunny day with many spectators supporting their favourites. Almeria who had won this competition last year was eager to defend their title.
The Men’s Pairs were played between the Almeria pair, John Fitzgerald and Graham Patrick against Brian Phillips and Alan deBoer of Indalo. For eight ends the game was close, John and Graham then scored on the next seven ends leading by six shots. Brian and Alan took the next three ends and scores were again level. However John and Graham did not let up and then scored over the final ends to win by four shots.
The Ladies Pairs were between the Almeria pair Cath Patrick and Ann Tuplin, against the formidable Indalo pair Maggie Holmes and Babs Davies. Although Cath and Ann had played very well throughout the competition, today was not kind to them with Maggie and Babs winning comfortably.
The Triples was a similar situation as the above Ladies Pairs. This time the Almeria three, Roy Tonkin, John Mannall and Patsy Tonkin were the masters, not allowing the Indalo three, Derek Webb, Keith Harvey and Linda Harvey get going at all by winning easily.
Finally the Fours with once again the Almeria four, Colin Wright, Viv Sykes, John Phoenix and Eileen Phoenix pressurised the Indalo four, Gerald Donck, Mo deBoer, Tony Davies and Barbara Ruscoe and again playing well enough to win by seven shots.
All in all a great competition and a very satisfying result for the defending champions. Dave Jenkins, the CALB Chairman congratulated all those who took part throughout the six weeks and especially the finalists. Colin Wright the Almeria captain was then presented the cup.
