2012 Jackson cup & Parsons Trophy Report
2012 Almeria Bowling Lawn Club
(Jackson Cup (Ladies) & Parsons Trophy(Men’s) Club Pairs.
The entries for these competitions were much improved compared with the previous years. Seventeen ladies and twenty-two men competed over three days in mixed weather of the occasional sunshine and sometimes very cold, to complete a very good competition.
The ladies commenced the competition on Monday morning the 20h January battling their preliminary and first round, followed by the men in the afternoon. Friday morning on 24th the ladies and the men’s quarter finals took place. This then left the both men and ladies semi-finals to be played in the afternoon and finals on Saturday 25th played at 1400.
The first men’s semi-final between Dave Allen, Tony Mullen against Alan Terry, J.Mannall. Alan and John started with a slight lead on the fourth end but Dave and Tony were not in the mood to let this continue and steamed home comfortably. The second semi-final was an exciting and very close game between two historically very good pairs, Colin Wright. Roy Tonkin and John Fitzgerald and Graham Patrick. The game was played professionally and in good humour. The quality of the shots at times was unbelievably good. It was nip and tuck until the eighteenth end when scores were 19-19. The extra end was again very close and after the measure Colin and Roy were declared the winners.
The ladies first semi-final was a little disappointing for Joan Parsons and Sue Mannall who could not match the game play from Chris Fitzgerald and Eileen Phoenix who won easily the second semi-final was between Sylvia Pritchard, Ann Tuplin and Catherine Patrick and Shelagh Allen. Unfortunately for Sylvia and Ann although they had some very good sessions during the game, Catherine and Shelagh were comfortable winners.
So in the Men’s Final defending champions Tony Mullen and Dave Allen were up against 2010 champions, Colin Wright and Roy Tonkin. The game was played in great spirit keeping the spectators amused with the friendly banter and at times superb play. Tony and Dave did not match their play as in previous rounds, but Colin and Roy were consistent and apart from losing five shots on the sixteenth end did not look like losing this quality match.
In the Ladies Final defending champions Catherine Patrick and Shelagh Allen were against the powerful new pair Chris Fitzgerald and Eileen Phoenix. Unfortunately for Chris and Eileen, Catherine and Shelagh were in a mean mood and won easily
Both of these finals were well supported by an enthusiastic number of spectators in at last, beautiful weather. Trophies were presented by our Lady Captain, Sue Mannall and photographs by yours truly who thanked all those who took part and of course the spectators.
