2012 February Monthly Report
After the hectic time of re-scheduling the various fixtures the Ladies Charity Triples series of games continued with games against Cabrera and La Mata. These games are thoroughly enjoyed by our ladies and the other clubs including Indalo who previously were not interested. All monies raised will go to a chosen charity by the girls at their annual lunchtime dinne. This year it will be at the Fantasia on 20th March. A big thank you goes to Sue Mannall who works hard to keep these events going.
The CALB Fours League competition commenced in January and continued in February, when our local clubs played against each other over six days. Clubs were split into two groups, Red and Blue. Unfortunately this year was not a repeat of last year when Almeria won both groups. This year Red group came last and Blue group narrowly lost to Indalo
The first of this month’s club competitions were the Appleby Vase, ladies singles and Dyer Cup, men’s singles. The two Finals took place on Saturday 11th February.
In the Dyer Cup, John Fitzgerald was against his good friend and pair’s partner, Graham Patrick who was celebrating his 65th birthday. This was an epic final with both players playing extremely good bowls throughout the game when on the twenty-fourth end scores were 19-19. Again it was a very good head with John just squeezing the two shots required to win. Both players must be congratulated on giving the many spectators a game to be remembered.
The Appleby Vase final was between Graham’s other half Catherine and Patsy Tonkin who had won this competition in 2008 and 2009. Catherine started well and was in the lead after seven ends. Patsy then started to show her experience by creeping ahead end by end. Catherine played some very good bowls and made a spirited fight back on the twenty-first and second end scoring two shots on each end. However Patsy wasn’t going to lose this fight and won by three shots. As usual thanks were given to all players, markers and spectators by yours truly for making these competitions go smoothly and effective.
The next club competitions, The Jackson Cup, Ladies Pairs and Parsons Trophy, Men’s Pairs took place on the 20th,24th and the final on the 25th February.
In the Jackson Cup the defending champions Catherine Patrick and Shelia Allen were against the powerful new pair Chris Fitzgerald and Eileen Phoenix. Unfortunately for Chris and Eileen, Catherine and Shelia were in a mean mood and won easily
In the Parsons Trophy the defending champions Tony Mullen and Dave Allen were up against 2010 champions, Colin Wright and Roy Tonkin. The game was played in Great Spirit keeping the spectators amused with the friendly banter and at times superb play. Tony and Dave did not match their play as in previous rounds, but Colin and Roy were consistent and apart from losing five shots on the sixteenth end did not look like losing this quality match
