     2015 Men and Ladies CALB Singles & Pairs Final Results

On Thursday 19th March the CALB Men and Ladies Singles Finals took place at Almeria Bowling Club.   This competition began in December 2014 and involved over one hundred and thirty players from bowling clubs, Almeria (ABC) Cabrera (CAB) and Indalo. (IND) Mojacar (MOJ) In the morning the Singles took place on a miserable rainy day with everyone getting very cold and wet, including the ‘willing’ markers, yours truly, Jim Pike and Umpire, David Jenkins. The afternoon was very dark and cloudy with the occasional sprinkling of rain when the Men and Ladies Pairs took place. The results were as follows:

  Men’ Singles:                              John Fitzgerald (ABC)

  Ladies Pairs:                          Linda Band/ Jean Smallwood (CAB)

  Men’s Pairs:                                 G.Donck/K. Harvey (IND)

Summary of Finals:

Ladies Singles – Barbara Davies (IND) started slow when Diane Reynolds (MOJ) had an early lead at 5-1. Barbara then settled down and both players gave their all with no one making any significant lead until the twenty-first end when Barbara had a four point lead at 20-16. Diane then scored three shots on the next end with the score at 20-19. The next end was crucial and Diane was holding two shots she required. Unfortunately she knocked one of Barbara’s woods up to give her the championship.

Men’s Singles – John Fitzgerald (ABC) who was runner up last year was in a mean mood and on his best form against David Ebdon (IND) who struggled, because of his rain -swept glasses, however still played some creditable shots. In the end John won comfortably

Ladies Pairs – Lyn Stoyles and Judy Abel (CAB) started well and were well ahead on the tenth end at 14-6. Unfortunately for them, Linda Band and Jean Smallwood (CAB) woke up and started pressurising their opponents and for the next six ends didn’t let them score. The score at this stage was 16-14 to Linda and Jean. Superb play by all players prevailed, but Lyn and Judy could only score a single shot, whereas Linda and Jean scored the necessary to win the championship.

Men’s Pairs: Colin Wright and Roy Tonkin didn’t play to their best, however Gerard Donck and Keith Harvey (IND) were on fire. Gerard and Keith were 12-6 ahead, then disaster struck and lost six shots on the next end with the score at 12-12. Looking good for Colin and Roy, but unfortunately for them Gerard and Keith kept the pressure on and deservingly won comfortably.

The Prize giving was conducted in the Miraflores Restaurant by yours truly when I asked Almeria Captain, John Fitzgerald to present the Trophies and cash prizes. I thanked all the support we had from all clubs who suffered the wet and cold during the day and stayed to the end. Thanks were also given to the Miraflores bar and restaurant staff for keeping us fed and watered.
