2010 Non Winners Singles Competition
The Non Winners Singles Cup is the first of the 2010 autumn competitions for those members who have not won a singles competition here in Spain or UK during the last 5 years.
Monday morning on 11th October, sixteen players commenced this keenly contested competition in glorious sunshine. In the morning the first round took place, in the afternoon the quarter finals. Because of a compact fixture program, the Semi-finals did not take place until Wednesday morning the 13th with the Final on Saturday 16th October at 1400.
This year the standard of play was very good throughout. The first Semi-final figured Eddie Donley who made this position in 2009 but was unsuccessful. This year he was in a mean mood and took the lead on the forth end against John Mannall and although John fought hard, Eddie won comfortably.
The second Semi was between good friends Rod Digweed and Wayne Roberts. This was a totally different contest with Rod putting pressure on Wayne, leading until the thirteenth end when scores were level at 12-12. The next six ends were tense with Rod taking the lead again by five shots on the fifteenth end. Wayne fought back bringing the scores level again on the seventeenth end at 17-17. On the next end Rod looked a sure winner taking thee shots. However Wayne had different ideas and to Rod’s diappointment and Wayne’s pleasure, Wayne wrapped the game up taking a full house of four shots, winning an extremely exciting game to reach the final.
The final on Saturday afternoon of 16rd October between Eddie Donley and Wayne Roberts was another blistering contest. It was nip and tuck low scoring game until the twentyfirst end when scores were level at 14-14. Again the last six ends kept the many spectators on the edge of their seats.Wayne went ahead by four shots on the next four ends bringing the score to 20-16. As often said in singles matches, the last shot is always the hardest to achieve. Eddie then scored three shots. Wayne was holding two winning shots until Eddie took the shot wood. Unfortunately for Wayne on his last delivery, hit Eddies trailing wood to give Eddie the two shots required to take the championship. What a great game to end the competition.
On the presentation of the cup yours truly thanked the two finalists for giving the many spectators a fantastic game. He also thanked the markers who without, the competition could not take place.
