2010 Arthur Pinn Drawn Pairs
Once again the support for this competition was very good with forty-two members going into the draw to play a drawn pairs knockout schedule over several days. On the 15th November the preliminary round was played in the morning and in the afternoon the first round took place. Friday morning of the 19th the quarterfinals were played reaching the Semi -final stage in the afternoon.
The first Semi featured a very experienced member, Colin Wright, who was partnered with a new bowler John Batson, playing the two experienced bowlers Jane Franklin and Roy Tonkin. John didn’t let the side down by playing consistent good bowling under the leadership of Colin. Unfortunately although Roy and Jane went into the lead early on they were unable to continue and weren’t able to maintain this start. It was however, a closely fought game with Colin and John securing their place in the final with a margin of four shots.
The second Semi was a family affair playing against each other. Mary Mullen and my wife Joan Parsons against the husband of Mary, Tony Mullen, partnered with Chris Ewer. The girls started off very slowly being ten shots down after five ends. They fought back hard reducing the lead by a single shot on the thirteenth end. It looked very likely that Mary and Jane were going to do the job and defeat the favoured couple. However Tony and Chris had other ideas and put the pressure on to be five shots ahead on the seventeenth end. The girls still persisted on the last end and were in a position with the placement of the head to get these shots. Joan was very unlucky in not moving the jack to the waiting woods. This win for Tony and Chris set up the prospective superb final against Colin and John.
Saturday afternoon of 20th November the scene was set for this unpredictable Final. Once again it was supported by lots of members looking forward to this contest. Although Colin and John fought hard Tony and Chris were in no mood to give their opposition any mercy. Both Colin and John had some superb shots, however Chris and Tony were consistent in their endeavor to win which they did comfortably
Peggy Pinn, the wife of Arthur, who this competition is dedicated too, kindly presented the cup.
