2011 ALBC Drawn Rinks Knockout Report
The first club competition of the year took place on Monday 10th January, ALBC Drawn Rinks. Only eight teams compared with fourteen teams last year took part in this knockout competition reaching the Semis on Monday afternoon and the Final on the morning of Friday 14th January. It is a great shame that more members are not taking part and achieving competition experience, however the members who did take part played some very impressive bowls.
The two Semi-finals on Monday afternoon were high quality games. The first featured a team comprising of John Fitzgerald, John Burgess, Ken Sykes and Chris Ewer against Les Pratchett, Paul Fitzhugh, Eieleen Pheoix and Christine Fitzgerald. Unfortunately for Les’s team, John’s were on fire and won easily.
The second game was a lot closer between our captain, Jim Pike, Graham Clough, Lyn Burgess and Sue Mannall taking on Colin Wright, Eddie Abrahams, Pat Deacon and John Pheonix. The first eleven ends were very close ending at end twelve with scores level at 10-10. Jims team then creped forward taking three shots on the next end only for Colin’s team to return the complement by equalling this with three shots making the score level again. The final four ends were very exciting with Jim’s team taking the lead again, then Colin and his team putting more pressure on by taking three shots and taking the lead followed by Jim’s team once again taking the lead by one shot and relying on their nerves on the last end which held, with them winning this epic competition with three shots
All members now looked forward to on paper to a very good game for the Final. However, John Fitzgerald’s team started aggressively taking six shots on the first two ends and continued to put pressure on Jim’s team throughout, having no answer to the onslaught of John and team allowing them to win comfortably.
