2011 Men and Ladies CALB Singles &Pairs Semi’s and Final- Cabrera
Friday the 18th March the Men and Ladies Singles and Pairs Semi-finals and Finals took place at Cabrera Bowling Club. The Ladies Semi-Final was played on Wednesday 16th and Final on the 17th as Judy Abel and Janey Leggate were both in the Singles Semis and possible Final.
The Mens Singes featured two players from Cabrera B.C. With Ian Brewster winning against Andy Cooper. In the early stages Ian took the lead, however Andy came very close to leveling the score on the sixteenth end. Ian had other ideas as he applied pressure winning by eight shots. Both finalists had comfortable wins in the Semi-Finals, Ian against Dennis Leigh from Indalo B.C. Andy against David Ebdon also from Indalo B.C.
The Ladies Singles Final was an interesting game with Janey Leggate taking an early lead against the favourite Judy Abel. The turning point was when Judy took four shots on the eleventh end taking the lead. Janey continued to fight hard and evened the score on the seventeenth end. Unfortunately for Janey, Judy then woke up and stormed ahead to win a very good game to watch. Both finalists had reached this stage by beating players from Indalo B.C. Judy against Gill Atkinson and Janey winning over Pat Morris.
The ladies Pairs Final were won by Judy Abel and Janice Brewster beating Janey Leggate and Cecily Pickers. In the Semi-Finals Judy and Jannice played Chris Iven and Lois Swaine, Janey and Cecily playing against Barbara Moynihan and Di Saunders. All the ladies were from Cabrera B.C.
The Mens Pairs Final, all from Cabrera B.C. was won by Roy Savage and Richard Swaine beating David Schofield and Stewart Whearty. David had stepped in for Trevor Robinson as a late replacement. Roy and Richard who had an impressive winning journey to reach this stage were still expected to have a tougher game than they had against David and Stewart. In the Semi-Finals, Roy and Richard won easily against the disapointing performance from Almeria pair John Compton and Les Pratchett. The game of the competition had to be the contest against the Almeria pair John Fitzgerald and Graham Patrick. David and Stewart steamed ahead on the early ends and were in a nice position to win easily. John and Graham then rose to the occasion and battled to level the scores on fourteenth end at 16-16. Then on the eighteenth and final end it was 19-19. John had taken three shots with his last wood to reach this stage. An extra end had to be played and Graham was holding shot wood, David then took the jack back to Stewart’s woods. Although John made a gallant effort he was unable to take the winning shot.
The prizes and cups for the victors of all disciplines were presented by the CALB Chairman, David Jenkins Thanks were expressed to the umpires, Brian Saunders on Thursday and Peter Marriott on Friday together with all markers thoughout the singles competitions, who without, could not take place.
