The Frank Sharpe is a very popular drawn rinks competition, taking place on Thursday afternoons, starting November 2011 going through to the final in March 2012. The eight players during the season scoring the most points in their top six games are drawn on the day to compete against each other. The result would be gauged on four points for winning and one for each end won. There were new faces on the block this year amongst the regulars of the winning top eight players and whoever who was drawn in each team it should develop into a good game.
The winners lead by Roy Tonkin and included Viv Sykes, John Phoenix and Graham Deykin beat their opponents who on paper were slight favourites, led by Tony Mullen, Wayne Roberts, Eileen Phoenix and Graham Patrick. It would be interesting to be a ‘fly on the wall’ to listen in the Phoenix household later in the evening as husbands and wives were in opposing teams!!
Roy’s team started well and steadily moved ahead and looked good for the team, but Tony’s team then scored five shots on eleventh end bringing the score in favour of Roy’s team 13-11. Unfortunately for Tony and his merry men it could not be maintained and on the seventeenth end, surrendered, because with the score level and the ends won to date couldn’t win. Well done all those who took part in the final and during the season.
Thanks to Jim Pike who co-ordinated the competition. Although the prizes will not be presented until the annual prize giving in December, thanks also go to Siobhan Herrity for presenting the Shield to the winners.
The Frank Sharpe competition was started in 2004 after one of our very popular bowlers, Frank Sharpe, died and the family wanted to do something to continue his memory. They over the years have presented prizes of vouchers and can be realised in the Ferreteria El Real on the Antes Industrial Estate, which is owned by Zoe, Frank’s granddaughter. Once again a big thank you for her and the families support.
